Former First District Commander Confirmed as MCP Assistant Chief

The appointment of Captain David C. Anderson as Montgomery County Police (MCP) Assistant Chief and Chief of the Field Services Bureau is now in effect. Nominated by County Executive Isiah Leggett, he was unanimously approved by Montgomery County Council members before they went on their summer recess this month. Chief Anderson had been serving in an “Acting” capacity since May when former MCP Assistant Chief Daryl McSwain began his appointment as Chief of the Maryland-National Capital Park Police – Montgomery County Division.

Chief Anderson, whose most recent prior assignment was Commander of the Montgomery County Police 1st District (Rockville), is an almost-29-year veteran of the department. He joined the department on August 7 of 1989 and was ranked first in his Entrance Level Training Academy (Recruit) class. Through the course of his MCP career he has been assigned to the 3rd Police District (Silver Spring) as patrol officer, Special Assignment Team member and as a detective. He also served as a Major Crimes Division detective in the Robbery and Homicide/Sex Sections. He served as well in the 4th District (Wheaton) and at the Police Training Academy. As a lieutenant he was the Deputy Director of the Special Operations Division, a Legal and Labor Division Executive Officer, Executive Officer for the Chief of Police, and a Deputy Commander for the 1st District. Upon attaining the rank of Captain he served as Director of the Personnel Division and as an Overnight Duty Commander, before becoming the 1st District commander.

Chief Anderson received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Police Administration from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. He received his Juris Doctor (JD) degree in December of 2012 from the University of Maryland School of Law.

A Montgomery County native, he was raised in Olney. His wife of 25 years is a Montgomery County Public Schools teacher who was raised in Damascus. They have two daughters, a Montgomery County middle school student and a Cadet Second Class attending the United States Air Force Academy.
