Detectives Investigate Domestic-Related Barricade in Colesville Area; Suspect Charged with First-Degree Assault

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, October 24, 2018

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department - 4th District Investigative Section have arrested and charged Jalen Christopher Marshall, age 25, of the 13500 block of Montvale Drive in Silver Spring, with the first-degree assault of his 72-year-old grandfather.  After assaulting his grandfather, Marshall barricaded himself inside the family's residence and after approximately five hours of negotiations, Emergency Response Team (ERT) officers forced entry into the home and arrested him.

This morning at approximately 9:05, officers were called to a residence in the 13500 block of Montvale Drive for the report of domestic violence.  Upon responding to the home, officers were met with the 72-year-old victim, who had lacerations to his face.  Marshall, the victim's grandson, was in the home.  When officers attempted to make contact with Marshall, he exited the home carrying what appeared to be a long rifle and then reentered the home.  (Officers located this weapon during a search of the home and determined that the long barrel replica firearm was a pellet gun.  See photo below).  Marshall exited and reentered the home several times carrying the rifle.  He told officers that he was going to drink bleach.  Emergency Response Team (ERT) officers were called to the scene to begin negotiations in an attempt to have Marshall exit the home peacefully.

While officers were trying to communicate with Marshall, the victim explained to investigators that Marshall, who lives with him and his wife (Marshall's grandmother), had been acting strangely the past several days.  This morning, as the victim was in the kitchen and Marshall was upstairs, the victim heard a loud commotion coming from the upstairs.  Marshall came downstairs into the kitchen and began yelling at his grandfather.  Marshall punched his grandfather and pushed him to the ground.  While the victim was still on the ground, Marshall struck the victim's face with a dining room chair.  The victim attempted to call 911 and run away but Marshall pushed him down again.  The victim was able to escape to the outside of the home as Marshall pursued him.  As the victim continued to attempt to get away, Marshall took a machete that he had in his vehicle and attempted to strike the victim.

The victim ran to a neighbor who was outside and the neighbor called 911.  Marshall ran back into the residence.

Shortly before 2:00 p.m., officers forced entry into the home and arrested Marshall. Marshall had used furniture to barricade himself inside of the home. During a search of the home, investigators located an approximately three-foot sword and the replica long gun that Marshall was carrying when he exited the home on several occasions (see photo below).

Marshall was transported to the Central Processing Unit and charged with first-degree and second-degree assault.  The grandfather was transported by Fire & Rescue personnel to a local hospital for medical treatment.
