Two Suspects Arrested for Attempted Carjacking in Gaithersburg

For Immediate Release: Monday, January 7, 2019

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division have charged Jemmy Antonio Chica-Cornejo, age 21, of South Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg, and a 14-year-old male juvenile of Gaithersburg, with an attempted carjacking that occurred in the area of South Frederick Avenue (Route 355) and West Deer Park Road on January 3.

On January 3 at approximately 6:50 p.m., 6th District officers and Gaithersburg Police Department officers were dispatched to the intersection of South Frederick Avenue and West Deer Park Road for the report of two males who were acting disorderly and one of them having a gun.

A Montgomery County police officer responding to the call observed the two suspects in the roadway of the 500 block of South Frederick Avenue.  One of the suspects was standing directly in front of a stopped truck and the other suspect was also standing near the vehicle.  Both suspects ran from the area but were apprehended after officers pursed them on foot and set up a perimeter.  A Gaithersburg police officer located a BB gun in close proximity to where the teenager was arrested.

The victim of the attempted carjacking stated that Chica-Cornejo was banging on the driver's side window of his vehicle and was pulling on the door handle and yelling while the juvenile stood directly in front of his vehicle.

Officers spoke with several witnesses in the area who stated that the two suspects were repeatedly walking in and out of the roadway and forcing vehicles to stop. One of the witnesses said he saw the juvenile suspect remove a gun from his waistband, point it at a vehicle, and then put the gun back in his waistband.

During police interviews, both suspects made admissions of guilt.  Chica-Cornejo and the juvenile suspect were charged with attempted carjacking and first-degree assault.  Chica-Cornejo was transported to the Central Processing Unit and the juvenile suspect was detained by the Department of Juvenile Services.
