Update: Suspect Arrested for November Shooting in Wheaton

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, January 29, 2019

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – 4th District Investigative Section have arrested and charged Santiago Julian Alvarez, age 18, of the 800 block of Brightseat Road in Landover, with attempted murder, assault, and reckless endangerment, for the November 21, 2018, shooting that occurred in a parking garage outside of a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Wheaton.

On November 21, at approximately 7:00 p.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a parking garage outside of the Dick’s Sporting Goods store located at 11160 Veirs Mill Road for the report of a shooting and a related vehicle collision that had just occurred.

Responding officers located a vehicle which had struck a brick support column outside of the front of the Dick’s Sporting Goods store.   Officers located an adult male front-seat passenger outside of that vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body.  The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.  Responding officers located the adult female driver and a juvenile female passenger inside the vehicle suffering from injuries that they sustained as a result of the collision.  They were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation by detectives determined that the bullet that struck the male victim originated from outside of the vehicle and from the first level of the parking garage.  Further investigation determined that just prior to the shooting, the male victim had been in two separate altercations with Alvarez.  One altercation occurred inside of the Westfield Wheaton mall and the other confrontation occurred inside of the Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Detectives believe that the vehicle struck the building as the female driver attempted to flee the area.

On December 4, 2018, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Alvarez charging him with one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of attempted second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and assault-related charges.

On January 26, 2019, Alvarez was arrested on the strength of the Montgomery County warrant and transported to the Central Processing Unit.  He is being held without bond.
