For Immediate Release: Wednesday, August 7, 2019
Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division, Cold Case Unit have arrested and charged
David Lee Williams, age 29, of the 19300 block of Circle Gate Drive in Germantown,
with the first-degree rape of an adult female that occurred on October 6, 2017, at a bus stop located on Watkins Mill Road at Travis Lane in Gaithersburg.
On February 8, 2018, The Montgomery County Department of Police Crime Laboratory received notice from the
Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) that an unknown suspect's DNA sample obtained from an August 7, 2017, attempted residential burglary scene in Gaithersburg matched the unknown suspect's DNA sample obtained from the October 6, 2017, first-degree rape in Gaithersburg. In short, the DNA match indicated that the same unknown suspect committed the attempted burglary and the first-degree rape.
Cold case detectives studied both investigations and noted that a "
David" was mentioned as a person of interest in both cases. Additional investigation led Cold Case investigators to identify
David Lee Williams as the possible suspect. Yesterday, a warrant was obtained for Williams' DNA and his DNA was submitted to the Montgomery County Department of Police Crime Laboratory for analysis. Testing revealed that Williams' DNA matched that of the suspect's DNA taken from the scene of the rape and the attempted burglary.
Last night, Williams was arrested in Germantown and charged with first-degree rape, first and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment. He was transported to the Central Processing Unit and is being held without bond. Additional charges regarding the burglary cases are anticipated.
