Officers Arrest Suspect for Discharging Gun in Gas Station Parking Lot in Silver Spring

Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police-3rd District have arrested and charged Desmond Jones, age 27, of Hyattsville, with crimes to include possession of a handgun, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and resisting arrest.

On November 6 at approximately 10:13 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center (911) received multiple calls regarding the sound of shots fired in the area of the Sunoco gas station located at 12040 Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring.  Officers responded to the business and located shell casings in the parking lot and in the roadway.

A gas station employee told officers that at approximately 10:00 p.m., Jones, who had earlier caused a disturbance in the business and had been told to leave by the employee, returned to the Sunoco gas station.  Jones began to argue with the employee outside of the business.  After some time, Jones got into his vehicle and as he drove away, fired multiple rounds from a handgun through his sunroof.

Witnesses were able to provide officers with Jones' identity and a description of his vehicle.

At approximately 2:37 a.m. on November 7, a 3rd District officer located Jones' vehicle to the rear of a business located at 12056 Cherry Hill Road.  Officers approached the vehicle and observed Jones laying down in the back seat.  Jones ignored officers' verbal commands and began to reach in the area of his waistband.  Officers were able to open the unlocked, rear door and take Jones into custody.  A loaded handgun was located in a concealed holster in Jones' waistband.

During the investigation it was determined that Jones is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior criminal conviction.

Detectives are looking into the possibility that Jones is responsible for a shooting which occurred during the overnight hours of October 19 to October 20, during which four town homes on Sweet Clover Drive in Silver Spring sustained damage from bullets.

Jones was transported to the Central Processing Unit where he is being held without bond.
