Holiday Alcohol Task Force Officer Arrests Driver for Possession of Handgun During Traffic Stop in Silver Spring

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, November 26, 2019

During the holiday season, Alcohol Task Force officers devote their full-time and attention to enforcing alcohol-related offenses.  During this past week, a task force officer arrested 19-year-old Kejuan Pope of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, for offenses to include possession of a handgun during a traffic stop in Silver Spring.

At approximately 12:38 a.m. on November 23, a Montgomery County Police task force officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a Honda Accord on Georgia Avenue at Thayer Avenue in Silver Spring.  The Honda stopped for a brief moment and then continued until it again came to a stop at Georgia Avenue and Silver Spring Avenue.

The officer approached the vehicle and observed a handgun with a drum magazine underneath the driver's seat.  The officer ordered the driver to put his hands on the steering wheel and not to move.  Additional officers responded to the vehicle stop and the driver was arrested.

Officers determined that the driver, identified as Pope, was driving on a suspended license.

The handgun with a loaded 50-round drum magazine was recovered from Pope's Honda.  Marijuana was also located in the vehicle.

Pope was transported to the Central Processing Unit and charged with offenses to include possession of a firearm by a person under 21 years of age, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and driving on a suspended driver's license.
