Wheaton Man Charged After Leading Officers on a Pursuit in a Stolen Vehicle

Officers from the 3^rd District have arrested and charged Yeyson Alexis Salgado-Umana, age 23, of the 2300 block of Glenmont Circle in Wheaton, for vehicle theft and assault offenses that occurred yesterday afternoon.  These charges are related to Salgado-Umana fleeing from 3^rd District officers while he was operating a stolen vehicle and then later assaulting officers who pursued him on foot.

Yesterday afternoon (Sunday, January 26), at approximately 2:18, a 3^rd District officer who was at the intersection of Piney Branch Road and Arliss Street in the Silver Spring area, observed a GMC Yukon that had been recently reported as stolen out of Gaithersburg.  Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver of the Yukon failed to stop for the officers and fled in the vehicle.   Officers pursued the stolen Yukon onto northbound New Hampshire Avenue, then onto Southampton Drive and then onto Beacon Road.  While on Beacon Road, the driver of the Yukon struck a marked police vehicle causing the cruiser to become disabled.  After the collision, the suspect fled on foot from the Yukon and officers continued to pursue him on foot.

Officers pursued the suspect on foot as he fled to the area of the Northwest Branch Anacostia River bed.  Officers caught up with the suspect as he fled along the river bed and attempted to place him under arrest.  The suspect assaulted multiple officers as they attempted to take him into custody.  Officers eventually placed the suspect under arrest and identified him as Salgado-Umana.

Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the area and transported two 3^rd District officers to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.  They were treated at the hospital and both officers were later released.

Fire and Rescue personnel also transported Salgado-Umana to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  Salgado-Umana was subsequently released from the hospital and transported to the Central Processing Unit where he was charged with assault-related charges, resisting arrest, theft of a motor vehicle, and destruction of property.  Salgado-Umana is being held without bond.
