Third District Officers Arrest Passenger for Possession of Stolen Handgun During Traffic Stop in Silver Spring

Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police-3rd District have arrested and charged Edward Lay, age 26, of Clinton, Maryland, with possession of a stolen handgun and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

On February 19, at approximately 10:28 p.m., a 3rd District officer on routine patrol was driving south on Georgia Avenue in the area of Bonifant Street when he observed a vehicle that was displaying vehicle tags that were registered to a different make and model car.  The officer stopped the vehicle and identified the driver and passenger.  The passenger was identified as Lay.

During a search of the vehicle, officers located marijuana and a loaded handgun under the front passenger seat.  Lay was arrested at the scene.

The handgun had been reported stolen.

It was determined that Lay is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to prior criminal convictions.

Lay was transported to the Central Processing Unit and released on bond.
