Theft From Vehicle Suspect Identified With Resident's Help

For Immediate Release: Monday, March 9, 2020

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Patrol Investigations Unit have charged Dametrice Payton, age 18, of an unconfirmed address, with offenses related to thefts from vehicles that occurred during January in the Aspen Hill area.  Payton was identified as the suspect after a resident recognized him from a January 13 surveillance video that had been shared on the Neighbors by Ring app.

On January 13, a suspect was observed on home surveillance video attempting to open multiple car doors on Rippling Brook Drive.  The video of the suspect was later shared on the Neighbors by Ring app.

A resident who saw the video on the app was at the Aspen Hill Shopping Center (located at 13661 Connecticut Avenue in Aspen Hill) on January 28 and observed an individual who was wearing the same clothing as the suspect in the surveillance video.  The resident immediately called police and responding officers identified the individual as Payton.  Officers further determined that Payton had an open warrant for his arrest.

During the investigation, investigators located multiple items in Payton’s possession that were later determined to have been stolen from vehicles.

Payton was recently charged with theft from vehicle-related offenses and released after posting a $2,500 bond.
