Alcohol Initiatives Unit Officer Arrests Driver for Possession of Handgun During Traffic Stop in Silver Spring

Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police- Alcohol Initiatives Unit have arrested and charged Frederick Bangura, age 21, of Silver Spring, Maryland, with firearm-related offenses to include possession of a loaded handgun in a vehicle and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

On June 20, at approximately 12:53 a.m., an Alcohol Initiatives Unit officer was on routine patrol and was driving in the area of Fenton Street in Silver Spring when he conducted a traffic stop of a Hyundai Elantra.

The officer identified the driver of the Hyundai as Bangura and also identified the passenger.  While the officer spoke with Bangura he observed marijuana on Bangura's shirt and in his lap.  During a search of the vehicle, officers located a loaded handgun in a purse placed on the back seat and a loaded high-capacity handgun magazine on the driver's side floorboard.  Additional marijuana was located on Bangura's person.

It was determined that Bangura is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior criminal conviction.

Bangura was arrested and transported to the Central Processing Unit.
