Suspect Charged with Vehicle Theft and Handgun Possession in Gaithersburg During Carjacking Investigation

For Immediate Release: Monday, October 5, 2020

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged Marquel Addison, age 25, of the 6600 block of Carriage Walk Circle in Gaithersburg, with vehicle theft and handgun-related offenses following a September 30 armed carjacking investigation that occurred in Gaithersburg.

The investigation by detectives determined that on Wednesday, September 30, at approximately 2:40 p.m., the adult male victim parked his vehicle on Travis Drive in Gaithersburg and left the area on foot.  Approximately twenty minutes later, the victim returned to his vehicle and was confronted by a suspect who was armed with a knife.  The suspect demanded the victim’s vehicle and the victim complied with the suspect’s demands.  The suspect then fled the area in the victim’s vehicle.

During the initial investigation, officers entered the victim’s vehicle into a national law enforcement database as being stolen from Montgomery County.   At approximately 5:45 p.m., a 5th District officer observed the victim’s stolen vehicle being driven in the area of Middlebrook Road and Frederick Road in Germantown.  Officers followed the victim’s car and conducted a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle on Chesley Knoll Drive in Gaithersburg.   The driver and sole occupant of the victim’s vehicle provided officers with a false name.  Officers eventually identified the driver as Addison and arrested him.  During a search of Addison, officers located a loaded .22 caliber handgun on him. Addison was determined to be prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a previous criminal conviction.

During the investigation, detectives determined that Addison was not the suspect who committed the armed carjacking.

Addison was transported to the Central Processing Unit where he was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a loaded handgun in a vehicle, and possession of a handgun by a prohibited person.  Addison is being held without bond.

Detectives continue to work to identify the suspect who committed this armed carjacking.
