Detectives Investigate Serious Bicycle-Involved Collision in Gaithersburg

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police - Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a serious bicycle-involved collision that occurred last night in Gaithersburg.

On Friday, October 9, at approximately 9:44 p.m., 6th District officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to Snouffer School Road at Sweet Autumn Drive for the report of a collision involving a bicyclist and a vehicle.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2000 Toyota Celica, driven by Trevon Thacker of Ivy Oak Drive in Gaithersburg, was traveling westbound on Snouffer School Road approaching Sweet Autumn Drive.  A bicyclist, identified as Jose Lopez Hernandez, age 36, of Mountain Ash Way in Gaithersburg, was riding his bicycle on Snouffer School Road near Sweet Autumn Drive.  For reasons still under investigation, the Celica and the bicycle collided on Snouffer School Road.

The preliminary investigation determined that Hernandez was not wearing a helmet and that the bicycle and Hernandez’s clothing did not have reflective material.

Hernandez was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Thacker was not injured in the collision.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773- 6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
