Officers Arrest Burglary Suspect As He Attempts to Break into Home; Charged with Seven Burglaries in Boyds

5th District Special Assignment Team (SAT) officers and 5th District detectives have charged a 16-year-old male from Boyds with the burglary of four homes and the attempted burglary of three homes in the Boyds area.

In the month of October, 5th District detectives began to investigate burglaries that were occurring in a small geographic area in the Boyds area and appeared to be committed by the same suspect.  5th District SAT officers began to patrol the area at night in an attempt to locate and arrest the suspect.

On October 26 at approximately 12:05 am, 5th District SAT officers who were monitoring the area of Gate Dancer Lane and Truffle Lane observed a suspect wearing a black mask and carrying a backpack use a flashlight to look into a rear door and window of a townhome in the 14300 block of Gate Dancer Lane.  The suspect climbed on the deck which led to the main level of the home and continued to use his flashlight to illuminate the inside of the residence.  Officers attempted to stop the suspect as he left the yard.  The suspect ran and after a short foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody and identified.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s home and located evidence, to include items stolen from the reported burglaries, inside his home.

The juvenile was charged with four counts of burglary and three counts of attempted burglary and was released to the custody of his parent.

Below is a summary of the burglaries determined to have been committed by the suspect:

*Burglary – July 8 or July 9, 18000 block of Wildman Court.  Reported on October 7 when resident called police to report that someone had been in his backyard the day before but ran off when a dog inside the home barked.  Person captured on home video surveillance.  At that time, resident reported that home had been burglarized in July and suspect had entered home via unlocked basement door and stole items.

*Burglary – Overnight hours of October 12 to October 13, 18100 block of Truffle Lane, suspect cut basement window screen and entered basement via unlocked window, stole items.  Home occupied.

* Burglary – October 19, approximately 1:35 am, 14300 block of Gate Dancer Lane, suspect forced entry into back door of home, entered main level of home and garage, rifled through vehicles, stole items. Suspect seen on home video surveillance. Home occupied.

*Burglary – October 20, approximately 2:27 am, 14000 block of Richter Farm Road, suspect cut home surveillance cable in rear of home, entered basement via unlocked sliding glass door, stole items.  Suspect seen on home surveillance video.  Home occupied.

*Attempted Burglary – Overnight hours of October 18 to October 19, 14200 block of Gate Dancer Lane, suspect cut four window screens.  Home occupied.

*Attempted Burglary – October 22, approximately 1:45 am,18100 block of Truffle Lane, suspect broke a glass window and the residence alarm activated.  A resident called 911 and the suspect fled.  The suspect returned to the home at approximately 3:58 am (after officers left) and attempted to enter the home through the broken window.  The resident yelled at the suspect and he fled.

*Attempted Burglary (described above) – October 26, approximately 12:05 am, 14300 block of Gate Dancer Lane.  Suspect arrested by officers.
