Montgomery County Police Officer Shot During Officer-Involved Shooting in Prince George's County; Suspect Deceased

A Montgomery County police officer was shot yesterday, Tuesday, November 17, during an attempt by Montgomery County police officers to arrest a homicide suspect.

Yesterday, the Montgomery County Police Department received information that Shawn Lequin Braddy, a suspect of a homicide committed on Monday in Clay County, Florida, may be in Montgomery County.  Officers from the Repeat Offender Unit (ROU), who are also members of the U.S. Marshals Service - Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, began an investigation into Braddy's possible whereabouts in Montgomery County.

ROU officers located Braddy, conducted surveillance, and at approximately 3:30 pm, attempted to arrest him in the 9500 block of Muirkirk Road in Laurel, Prince George's County.  During this encounter, Braddy began to shoot at the Montgomery County police officers and the officers returned fire. One Montgomery County police officer was shot.  Braddy was shot and killed.

The officer who was shot is identified as Detective Donnie Oaks, a 20-year veteran of the Police Department.  He is currently assigned to the Special Investigations Division - ROU.  Detective Oaks underwent surgery last night and remains at a local hospital in stable condition.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Prince George's County Police Department.  Additional questions about their investigation should be directed to that agency.
