Suspect Arrested for Assault and Possession of Prohibited Ammunition Following Vehicle Pursuit in Germantown

For Immediate Release: Thursday, January 14, 2021

Officers from the Montgomery County Police – 5th District have arrested and charged Darius Trayon Jones, age 31, of the 2000 block of 38th Street in Northwest, Washington D.C., with assault, reckless endangerment, possession of prohibited ammunition, and traffic-related offenses after Jones fled in a vehicle from a traffic stop in Germantown.

On Friday, January 8 at approximately 1:08 a.m., a 5th District officer was on routine patrol at the intersection of Middlebrook Road and Waring Station Road when he observed a Nissan Altima fail to stop for a steady red traffic signal at that intersection.  The officer conducted a traffic stop on the Nissan and identified the driver as Jones.  Jones could not produce a driver’s license or registration for the Altima.  A computer check of the license plates determined that the plates being displayed on the Nissan belonged to a different vehicle.  Jones fled in the Nissan from the traffic stop as officers worked to determine the registration status of the Altima.

Officers pursued Jones on Middlebrook Road. At one point, Jones drove down a dead-end street, made a U-turn, and drove directly at the officer’s cruiser.  In the area of Middlebrook Road and Grassy Knoll Terrace, Jones drove off the roadway and struck a tree.  Jones was not injured in the collision and was immediately arrested.

During a search of the Nissan, officers located ammunition for a 12-gauge shotgun inside the front passenger area.  Officers determined that Jones was prohibited from possessing the ammunition due to a prior criminal conviction.

Jones was transported to the Central Processing Unit and is being held without bond.
