Silver Spring Shooting Victim Dies of Injuries; Major Crimes Detectives Investigating Death as Homicide

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division are investigating the homicide of Derek James McBrayer, age 40, of Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda.  McBrayer was shot on Wednesday, March 3, and succumbed to his injuries on the evening of Wednesday, March 10.  At this time, investigators do not believe this to be a random event.

On March 3, at approximately 5:39 pm, 3rd District officers responded to the report of a shooting victim in the 1000 block of Quebec Terrace.  Officers located McBrayer laying on the sidewalk, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his leg.  Officers immediately applied tourniquets to McBrayer’s leg and Fire and Rescue personnel transported him to a local hospital; he died on March 10.

The Medical Examiner completed an autopsy and has ruled the death a homicide by gunshot wound.

The investigation by Major Crimes detectives has determined that the shooting occurred outside in the 1000 block of Quebec Terrace.  Witnesses heard multiple gunshots and then observed approximately seven to eight males running from the area.  Officers located bullet holes in several vehicles in the parking lot and one in an apartment window.
