Suspect Arrested for Possession of Drugs and Possession of Stolen Handgun During Traffic Stop in Silver Spring

Officers from the 3rd District have arrested Elijah Nyamekye, age 20, of Silver Spring, with crimes to include possession of drugs and firearm-related offenses to include possession of a firearm by a person under 21 years of age and possession of a stolen handgun.

On March 23 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a 3rd District officer stopped a vehicle for multiple traffic violations in the area of Georgia Avenue and Spring Street in Silver Spring.  One of the passengers was identified as Nyamekye.  Officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and observed evidence in the vehicle and on the occupants that indicated the three individuals were distributing drugs.  This evidence included a scale, marijuana, cash, and a small bag commonly used to package drugs for sale.

Nyamekye was detained and officers located a loaded handgun in his waistband and cocaine in his pants pocket.  The handgun was determined to have been stolen.

Nyamekye had a warrant for his arrest from another jurisdiction in Maryland.

Nyamekye was transported to the Central Processing Unit and is being held without bond.

The investigation regarding the drugs in the vehicle and the other occupants’ possible involvement with these crimes is ongoing.
