Gaithersburg, MD - Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged Samuel Lee Powers, a 17-year-old, for the August 18 shooting at the Plum Gar Community Center in Germantown. Powers is being charged as an adult.
On August 18, at approximately 9:30 p.m., 5th District officers responded to 19561 Scenery Dr. in Germantown for the report of a shooting that just occurred. Upon arrival, officers located four victims with gunshot wounds. One later died of his injuries.
Fourteen-year-old Shilen Wylie was identified as the individual who shot the four victims. Wylie was taken into custody and charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder. Wylie has been charged as an adult.
During the course of the investigation, Powers was identified as a potential suspect. Probable cause was developed to charge Powers with first-degree murder. On August 26, detectives applied for and received an arrest warrant charging Powers with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. On September 1, Powers turned himself in at Police Headquarters. Powers was then placed under arrest and transported to the Central Processing Unit, where he is being held without bond.
