Montgomery County Police Investigating Fatal Collision in Silver Spring

For Immediate Release: Thursday, August 19, 2021

Gaithersburg, MD - Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision involving two vehicles that occurred on August 19 in Silver Spring.  

 

On August 19, at approximately 5:53 p.m., 3rd District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the intersection of New Hampshire Ave. and E. Shaw Ave. for the report of a collision involving two vehicles.   

 

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the operator of a white Chevrolet Traverse attempted to make a left turn from southbound New Hampshire Ave. onto eastbound E. Shaw Ave. The Chevrolet was struck in the intersection by a red Toyota Takoma that was traveling northbound on New Hampshire Ave.  

 

The operator of the Chevrolet was transported to Suburban hospital. 

 

An adult male occupant who was in the rear cargo area of the Chevrolet was transported to Suburban Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival. The decedent was identified as 85-year-old Clennie Hughes Murphy of Silver Spring. 

 

The Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) continues to investigate this collision. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact CRU detectives at 240-773-6620.
