For Immediate Release: Wednesday, April 13, 2022

Gaithersburg, MD - Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have charged 23-year-old Thomas Whiting with an armed carjacking that occurred on April 6, 2022 in the 260 block of Congressional Lane in Rockville.

At approximately 9:46 p.m., Rockville City Police Officers responded to the location for the report of an armed carjacking that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives has determined that as an adult male victim exited his residence towards his red 2012 Toyota Corolla, the suspect, later identified as Whiting, allegedly approached him, pointed a black handgun and demanded the key to his vehicle. The victim complied with Whiting’s demands. The suspect then fled the scene in the Toyota on Congressional Lane towards E. Jefferson St. The victim provided officers with a description of Whiting.

Officers placed a lookout for the stolen vehicle and Whiting. At approximately 9:59 p.m., 3rd District officers located the vehicle and pursued it into Prince George's County to Route 4, where the pursuit was terminated. The vehicle was entered as stolen into the law enforcement databases.

On Friday, April 8, at approximately 5 p.m., officers from the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department observed a vehicle matching the description of the victim’s vehicle on Anacostia Rd. in the southeast area of Washington, D.C. Officers determined that the vehicle was reported as stolen out of Maryland for a carjacking offence. When officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver, later identified as Whiting, pulled over and exited the vehicle. Officers apprehended Whiting and observed a black handgun in between the center console of the vehicle and the driver’s seat.

Whiting was placed under arrest and transported to a detention center in Washington, D.C. Officers also determined that there was an active arrest warrant against Whiting for failure to appear in court for an illegal possession of a firearm.

Throughout the course of the investigation, probable cause was developed to charge Whiting via an arrest warrant with motor vehicle theft, armed carjacking and the use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Whiting is being held in a detention center in Washington, D.C.
