Twenty-Eight-Year-Old Man Charged with Attempted Second-Degree Murder

Gaithersburg, Maryland – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 2nd District Investigative Section have charged 28-year-old Maurice Ricks, of Washington, D.C., with the attempted second-degree murder of an adult male that occurred on Sunday, January 1, 2023, in the 8500 block of 16th Street in Silver Spring.  

 

At approximately 6:05 p.m., 2nd District officers responded to the location for the report of a shooting and located an adult male victim, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to his body. Officers provided life-saving measures to the victim until Montgomery County Fire Rescue arrived.  

 

The victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. 

 

The investigation has determined that after having an argument with the victim, Ricks drew a gun and shot the victim.   

 

Through the course of the investigation, detectives identified Ricks as the suspect. 


Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Ricks, charging him with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and use of firearm in the commission of a violent felony.  

 

On Friday, January 13, 2023, Ricks was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals Service in Washington, D.C. and then transported to a correctional facility where he is currently awaiting extradition to Montgomery County.
