Thirty-One-Year-Old Carjacking Suspect Arrested

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 20, 2023

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 31-year-old Freddy Obi with an attempted armed carjacking and strong-arm carjacking, both of which occurred on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, in the Burtonsville and Silver Spring areas. 


At approximately 6:13 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 14900 block of Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville for the report of an attempted armed carjacking. Unable to take the vehicle, the suspect was observed leaving the scene in a white Ford Fusion with significant damage to the back bumper. 


At approximately 6:21 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 14700 block of Good Hope Road in Silver Spring for the report of another carjacking. 


The investigation revealed that a Black male, later identified as Obi was observed getting out of a white Ford Fusion with damage to the back bumper, just before approaching the victim and demanding the car keys. Officers located the white Ford Fusion at the scene and determined that it was registered to Obi. 


At 6:50 p.m., Obi was arrested in Laurel for an unrelated crime. Items of evidentiary value and the vehicle that was stolen during the carjacking were located nearby. 


On May 21, 2023, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Obi, charging him with carjacking, attempted armed carjacking, first-degree assault and robbery. 


On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, Freddy Obi was taken into custody on the strength of a warrant. Obi was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where is currently being held without bond.
