Sixteen-Year-Old Arrested on Multiple Counts of Auto Theft After Attempting to Steal Montgomery County Police K-9 Cruiser

Gaithersburg, MD- A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody following a pursuit of a stolen vehicle and attempting to steal a Montgomery County Police K9 cruiser.


On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at approximately 5:25 a.m., officers from the Gaithersburg Police Department observed a stolen Ford F150 in the area of Travis Ave. and attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and continued driving at an accelerated speed. 


A K9 officer with Montgomery County Police Department observed the vehicle near 355 North and Appledowre Way traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer activated their emergency lights and a pursuit was initiated.


The driver of the Ford stopped in the are of Watkins Mill Rd. and Watkins Mill Pl. after the driver hit a curb, disabling the truck. Then, the driver, who was the only person in the truck ran away. The officer chased the suspect on foot. During the foot chase, the suspect ran back toward the officer’s cruiser, got in and attempted to steal the cruiser. The officer was able to stop the suspect and take him into custody.


The suspect was taken to the 6th District station where he was charged with multiple counts of auto theft related charges, traffic charges and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, by Gaithersburg Police.


The suspect was released to the custody of his parent/guardian.
