Montgomery County Police Officer Found Guilty in January 6th Insurrection Case

For Immediate Release: Friday, August 23, 2024

Gaithersburg, MD – Justin Lee, a Montgomery County police officer, was found guilty today in the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia for his involvement in the January 2021 insurrection at the United States Capitol. The guilty verdict was delivered by Judge Trevor McFadden during a bench trial.

Lee was indicted in October of 2023 and charged with two felony counts related to his actions during the insurrection.   He had been on administrative leave following his involvement in the shooting death of an armed suspect on July 22, 2023. The Maryland Attorney General’s office reviewed the fatal shooting and did not pursue charges against Lee. As a result, Lee has not performed the duties of a police officer since the shooting.

Lee participated in the January 6 insurrection prior to being hired as a Montgomery County Police Officer.

Lee has been relieved of his police powers during the pendency of this case. Pursuant to the Public Safety Article of the Maryland Code, Section 3-107, upon the finding of guilt, Lee will no longer be employed by the Montgomery County Department of Police.

The department remains committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct and accountability.

The Montgomery County Department of Police is fully committed to maintaining its core principles of professionalism, accountability, and integrity. We are dedicated to ensuring that all our officers continue to uphold the standards that serve the best interests of the Montgomery County community.
