Germantown Standoff Ends Peacefully; Suspect Charged with False Imprisonment

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, November 19, 2024

Gaithersburg, MD – 49-year-old Marques Buford, of Germantown, is in custody following a standoff outside an apartment complex on Sunday, November 17, 2024.

Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District were dispatched to the 12300 block of Silvergate Way at approximately 7:19 a.m. for a report of a domestic incident. A woman called the Emergency Communications Center, stating that her husband would not let her leave their residence. Buford reportedly made threats toward police if they attempted to enter the apartment.

A check of the address revealed Buford’s history of dangerous behavior.

Upon arrival, officers encountered Buford outside the apartment, armed with a large butcher knife. 5th District officers attempted to use less-lethal force, but it had no effect because Buford was wearing layers of clothing and a paintball mask.

An Emergency Response Team (ERT) was initiated, and SWAT staged near the location. 5th District officers, including a trained 5D officer negotiator, worked to contain and de-escalate the situation. Buford was apprehended as he attempted to run away from the scene. The efforts by officers resulted in Buford being taken into custody without injury to him or any officers.

Buford was evaluated at a local hospital and subsequently transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he was charged with false imprisonment. He is being held without bond.
