Montgomery County Student Charged After Making School Threats

For Immediate Release: Thursday, March 20, 2025

Gaithersburg, MD – A 13-year-old Montgomery County student has been charged after making threats against a local school.

On Monday, March 17, 2025, administrators at Parkland Middle School received phone calls from an individual claiming they intended to carry out a school shooting. Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) officials immediately notified the Montgomery County Department of Police and School Community Engagement Officers responded to the campus.

As a precaution, Parkland Middle School initiated a shelter-in-place, and nearby Brookhaven Elementary School did the same because of its close proximity.

An investigation by MCPD’s Behavioral Assessment Unit (BAAU) identified the caller as a 13-year-old male student from a different middle school. The juvenile has been charged with threats of mass violence and disruption of school activities. Because the suspect is a minor, the case will be handled by the Department of Juvenile Services.

At this time, the BAAU has determined there is no credible threat to the community.
