Ninety Move Over Violations Issued in Route 29 Traffic Safety Operation

For Immediate Release: Thursday, April 3, 2025

Gaithersburg, MD – The Montgomery County Department of Police, in collaboration with the Howard County Police Department, Maryland State Police, and Maryland Transportation Authority Police, conducted a move over and speed enforcement detail along the Route 29 corridor from the D.C. line to Interstate 70 in Howard County on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

The enforcement initiative focused on drivers failing to move over for stopped emergency vehicles and speeding violations.

During the operation, officers conducted 271 traffic stops, resulting in:

  • Move over violations: 90
  • Speed violations: 94
  • Other violations: 90
  • Total citations issued: 90
  • Total warnings issued: 237
  • Safety equipment repair orders issued: 10

Additionally, Montgomery County Police commercial vehicle inspectors conducted seven commercial vehicle inspections, which resulted in:

  • 28 violations observed and issued
  • 3 vehicles placed out of service
  • 1 driver placed out of service

An MCPD motors officer also stopped and ticketed the driver of a BMW for driving 102 mph in a posted 60 mph zone.

Maryland’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching any stopped vehicle displaying warning signals, including police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, and even disabled vehicles. Violating this law can result in fines and points on a driver’s record.
