Eighty-Five-Year-Old Bicyclist Dies Following Collision in Silver Spring

For Immediate Release: Monday, June 9, 2025

Gaithersburg, MD – The Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal collision involving a bicyclist that occurred on Sunday, June 1, 2025, on Bramblewood Drive.

At approximately 4 p.m., officers from the 4th District and Montgomery County Fire Rescue were dispatched to the location for the report of a collision involving a bicyclist.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the bicyclist, later identified as 85-year-old, Joel Allen Katz of Silver Spring, was riding in the 15000 block of Bramblewood Drive, when he was struck by a driver of a blue 2015 Mercedes-Benz SUV backing out of a driveway. Katz was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

On Saturday, June 7, 2025, Katz died at the hospital, as a result of his injuries.

This is an active and ongoing investigation.
