Montgomery County Signs Contract to Install New Automated Traffic Enforcement Technology

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, September 23, 2025

Gaithersburg, MD - Montgomery County has signed a new contract with Vitronic, a global leader in automated traffic enforcement operating in more than 80 countries, to expand its program with 140 new speed cameras and 76 red-light cameras. The expansion includes more than 55 roadside deployable cameras, as well as fixed pole cameras in school zones and red-light cameras throughout the county. Installation is scheduled to begin in October and continue in the weeks that follow.

The cameras will be placed in a combination of existing and new locations identified through traffic safety data with an emphasis on areas with the highest rates of speeding and injury-related collisions. The goal is to place cameras where they will make the greatest impact in reducing crashes and saving lives. Automated enforcement is one of several measures supporting Montgomery County’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate serious and fatal collisions by 2030. Since the program began, traffic cameras and related efforts have contributed to an 11% drop in serious and fatal crashes.

A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 30, to provide additional details about legislation that takes effect on October 1 that establishes the new graduated fine schedule for automated speed camera violations and enables the County to expand enforcement along the High Injury Network (HIN), the roadway segments that account for the county’s highest percentage of serious and fatal collisions, as part of the Montgomery County Police Department’s Safe Speed program. Additional information about Vision Zero is available on the County’s website.
