Detectives Investigate Rollins Avenue Fatal Pedestrian Collision; Victim's Identity Released

Gaithersburg, MD – The Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that resulted in the death of 87-year-old Vipa Sankanung, of Rockville.

 

On Friday, November 21, 2025, at approximately 2:53 p.m., Rockville City Police officers responded to the intersection of East Jefferson Street and Rollins Avenue for the report of a collision involving a female pedestrian and a 2019 Honda Pilot.

 

The initial investigation revealed that Sankanung was walking north across Rollins Avenue when, for reasons still under investigation, she was struck by the Honda as it turned left from southbound East Jefferson Street onto eastbound Rollins Avenue.

 

Sankanung was transported to an area hospital, where she later died on November 28, 2025, as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. The Collision Reconstruction Unit was not notified of her death until recently.
