Good afternoon!
It’s great to have a community organization such as the Derwood Alliance Church to see the value to the community of sponsoring a farmers’ market. The growth of farmers markets is one of the best trends here in Montgomery County.
They do a lot for so many people. They provide a great source of fresh, healthy food and that food is also convenient for people who might not otherwise have access to it.
Markets also provide new outlets for farmers and others who sell their products to customers who love coming to local markets for fresh fruits, vegetables, bread and many other items.
Farmers’ Markets not only provide access to fresh foods for the body, but they also provide fresh foods for the mind. These markets, whether in my home community over in Burtonsville, or here in Derwood, or many other neighborhoods, are a great gathering place for the community.
Community farmer’s markets are for everyone – designed to be accessible to all and to create a sense of community engagement.
To that end, organizations such as Milk Lady Markets, the organizer of the Derwood farmers’ market, gives matching dollars to SNAP and WIC coupon shoppers, helping to ensure everyone can take advantage of the opportunities farmers’ markets create.
I am grateful to the Derwood Alliance Church for leading the way to make this happen.
I would especially like to commend Pastor Mark Trinkle, Associate Pastor Jen Ashby, and Ms. Gigi Goin, Founder of Milk Lady Markets. Your leadership was integral to making this vision a reality.
