County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Clarksburg Sewer Extension Groundbreaking

23365 Frederick Road, Clarksburg

As prepared

Good morning! It is a pleasure to be here today to break ground for the Clarksburg Historic District Sewer extension.

Usually, when we have a groundbreaking ceremony, we look forward to a new, glistening state-of-the-art facility.

That is not the case with this project.

At the completion, while people may not see a change above ground, the result of this project will make a daily difference and lasting impact on the residents and businesses in the Clarksburg Historic District community and the Ten Mile Creek Watershed.

Clarksburg used to be a small place; however, over the past 12 years it has grown.  I am proud of my Administration, the County Council, and our partners at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, who worked together to fund this vital resource for the future.

The project not only provides our Clarksburg Historic District with necessary sewer resources, it also ensures that we will be able to keep Clarksburg safer, as the absence of a sewer system prohibited the construction of Fire Station No. 35.

Public safety remains among my highest priorities and the new fire station will strengthen critical fire and rescue services for our Clarksburg residents.

This completed sewer project brings positive environmental benefits by removing the residents and businesses from the septic system.

I want to thank David Dise and the entire Department of General Services Team that works so hard to continue to build up this our great County.

I want to thank the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission who worked diligently to review and permit the project to assist our efforts in Clarksburg and their ultimate ownership and operation of the new services. Thank you for making this possible.

And thank you all for coming out today!
