County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Montgomery College Germantown Campus

Globe Hall, High Technology Building

As prepared

Good afternoon! This is an exciting day for Montgomery College and for Montgomery County and the State of Maryland.

I am proud to say that Montgomery College is the first community college in Maryland to be designated a Regional Institution Strategic Enterprise Zone, also known as a RISE Zone.

I want to thank the Montgomery County Council for unanimously approving this application; and I want to thank the State of Maryland and the Maryland Department of Commerce for approving this RISE Zone.

This designation is important because it is will increase economic development and job creation around this campus with incentives for businesses to move or expand into the RISE zone through real property and tax credits.

The RISE Zone will help us better realize our vision for Upcounty and Montgomery College as an economic engine.

As we attract more innovative companies to Germantown, there will be more opportunities for students to get internships and jobs after graduation.

That’s a win for the College, a win for the County and a win for the State.

The RISE Zone ties into the County’s economic priorities by advancing key industries such as biotech and cybersecurity.

In addition, Montgomery College’s Germantown campus has also been named an Opportunity Zone which provides federal tax incentives to spur investment in underserved communities by attracting investment.

These incentives should spur further economic development in the form of job creation and revitalization.

The future of Montgomery College, the future of Germantown and the future of Montgomery County is bright and on the rise.

Thank you!
