(Site of East County Regional Services Center)
Good afternoon! I am glad to be here today at the groundbreaking celebration for Willow Manor at Fairland Senior Housing.
I’m pleased to see that we are joined here today with KB Companies, which is developing this project – along with CBP Constructors and Zavos Architecture and Design; and Habitat America, the property management company.
I am grateful for all the work they have put in to get us to this groundbreaking today.
By increasing the number of affordable and market rate units for seniors, this project helps address the growing demand for senior housing in Montgomery County.
When complete in 2020, Willow Manor will provide 121 apartments for persons age 62 and over.
Half of these apartment units will be available at reduced rents for seniors with income at or below 60% of the area median income.
Willow Manor is yet another example of how we can leverage County assets to advance the quality of life for our residents.
Additionally, toward my goal of creating vital living for residents, Willow Manor is located near public transportation, the East County Regional Services Center, and the East County Community Center.
At the East County Community Recreation Center, residents will be able to access fitness, health and wellness classes, swimming, adult sport leagues, day trips and much more.
To further stay on top of their health, Willow Manor residents will be able to stop by the Mobile MED clinic at the East County Regional Service Center.
Residents will also be able to take a short bus ride to Burtonsville for shopping or visit the Marilyn Praisner Library.
At Praisner, they might join a book club, a chess club, a Spanish conversation club – or even become a “grand-reader” to local youth.
Residents also will be able to take the bus into Silver Spring to visit friends and enjoy more restaurants, entertainment, and other amenities.
And starting in 2020, our new Bus Rapid Transit line, “FLASH,” will begin providing even more convenient and efficient transit between Burtonsville and Silver Spring.
As I prepare to end my final term as your County Executive, I am heartened to see that we continue to be on the right path of making our County a great place to live, work, play, and retire.
Thanks to everyone for coming out this afternoon. I look forward to seeing this project when it is completed.
