Veterans Day Statement From Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich

For Immediate Release: Wednesday 11 November

Today is the 102nd anniversary of Armistice Day, which was the celebration of the end of World War I.  It later became Veterans Day and now we honor the countless number of men and women who have served our country during times of war and peace.  These heroes have made an incredible sacrifice, putting their country ahead of their lives and family.  And they did so with tremendous pride and honor.  Far too often, these heroes do not receive the type of treatment they deserve after giving our country so much.  Many return home with the physical and mental scars of combat to find a  limited amount of support from the nation they served.  Montgomery County is home to thousands of veterans who are our neighbors, coworkers, families and friends who deserve recognition for their service to our country and we have worked to provide more support to these courageous men and women.

The late Arthur Ashe, who served in the Army during the Vietnam era, said, 'True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.'  This is what our veterans did for each of us and our country – they undramatically served others.  I urge the residents of Montgomery County to honor the veterans in your life by simply saying, 'Thank you for your service.'  It is the least we can do for these heroes, and their families, who have sacrificed so much for us.
