How to recycle / dispose charcoal

Search for another material

Manufactured charcoal that contains lighter fluid or other flammable agents

Bring manufactured charcoal containing flammable agents and the used bags (such as Kingsford Match Light, Instant Light, etc…) from your home to the household hazardous waste drop-off at our Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station at no additional charge.

Handle this charcoal with care, as vapors may cause irritation to your nose, throat, and respiratory tract. Repeated or prolonged exposure to concentrations may cause dizziness, weakness, nausea, headaches and/or unconsciousness.

Manufactured regular charcoal briquettes

To dispose of manufactured regular charcoal briquettes:

  • Soak the charcoal briquettes in water for 20 minutes to 1 hour.
