For Immediate Release: Tuesday, October 17, 2023
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will join Councilmembers Marilyn Balcombe, Evan Glass, Will Jawando and Sidney Katz, Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman and County Department of Health and Human Services Director James Bridgers at the Nadim Khan Memorial Homeless Resource Day to observe first-hand the variety of programs and services offered for residents experiencing homelessness. This year’s event, in its ninth year (no events were held during COVID-19), is named to honor the late Nadim Khan, service chief for Special Needs Housing in the Department of Health and Human Services. The event will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg. County Executive Elrich will participate in a brief program at 12:15 p.m.
More than 60 organizations will offer a range of resources including free medical screenings, legal services, financial counseling, tax assistance, substance use and mental health counseling and social services. More than 300 volunteers will be assisting attendees to navigate the range of resources.
Among the services that will be offered at the event will be free haircuts and chair massages. Attendees can learn about housing and employment opportunities and apply for Motor Vehicle Administration identification cards. Transportation will be provided from the Bethesda, Rockville, Shady Grove and Silver Spring Metrorail Stations. Bi-lingual guides and sign language interpreters will be available to assist attendees.
During the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments annual point-in-time survey, a one-day count of the homeless population conducted in January 2023, there were 894 homeless individuals counted in Montgomery County, a 54 percent increase from the previous year’s count.
