Community Action VITA Program Now Preparing Amended, Prior Year and Current Year Tax Returns for Low-Income Residents

The Community Action Agency’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) partnership, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, is now scheduling appointments through October 31 for amended and prior year (2013, 2014 and 2015) tax returns. VITA’s free tax preparation services are exclusively for Montgomery County residents. To qualify, residents must have incomes of less than $54,000.

Appointments are currently available on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Takoma-East Silver Spring Center, located at 8513 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring and on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the MidCounty Regional Center, located at 2424 Reedie Drive in Wheaton.  To schedule an appointment or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please visit montgomerycountymd.gov/freetaxhelp or call 240-777-1123. Since July 2015, the VITA partnership has completed 2,543 tax returns. VITA customers received more than $4.9 million in refunds and credits, including more than $1.2 million in federal, state and local Earned Income Tax Credits. VITA is a volunteer-based program, which was supported by 122 VITA volunteers, serving 2,339 hours as greeters, intake screeners, preparers, quality reviewers, interpreters and hunger resource (SNAP) navigators.
