Montgomery Council Committee to discuss
County rental housing study

ROCKVILLE, Md., November 23, 2016—The Montgomery County Council’s Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28, will hold a worksession on the County Planning Department’s rental housing study. The Planning Department conducted a comprehensive scan of the Montgomery County rental situation in an attempt to better understand the market for affordable housing and identify future opportunities to preserve and develop affordable housing.
The PHED Committee, which is chaired by Councilmember Nancy Floreen and includes Councilmembers George Leventhal and Hans Riemer, will meet in the Seventh Floor Conference Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.
The meeting will be will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM). The channel can be viewed on Cable Channels 996 (high definition) and 6 (standard definition) on Comcast; Channels 1056 (HD) and 6 (SD) on RCN; and Channel 30 on Verizon. During the worksession on the rental housing study, Planning Department staff will discuss with the committee how it has already used the findings from the needs assessment phase of the study.
The committee also will continue its review of the proposed Greater Lyttonsville Sector Plan that addresses issues in the historic section of Silver Spring that likely will be undergoing revitalization in the future.
The discussions Monday will focus on site specific zoning and the plan's recommendations for the environment, community facilities, parks and open space and community design.
At the first worksession on the Lyttonsville Plan, the committee discussed adding staging to the Sector Plan, meaning that certain elements of the plan could not proceed until other elements—such as infrastructure or transportation improvements—were in place. The first worksession also focused on affordable housing.
