The Montgomery County Council today join in the national recognition of Korean American Day, which was officially celebrated on Jan. 13 while the Council was on recess. Members of many aspects of the Korean American community attended the ceremonies in Rockville.

The text of the proclamation that was presented by Council President Roger Berliner and Councilmember Tom Hucker:
WHEREAS, on January 13, 1903, the first Korean immigrants arrived in the Hawaiian Islands, marking the first entry of Korean immigrants to the United States territories; and
WHEREAS, the United States offers the opportunity for individual initiative, creativity, hard work and success, and the 2017 theme of Korean American Day illustrates these opportunities as this year’s day places special recognition on Korean American leaders in science and technology; and
WHEREAS, the achievements and contributions of Korean Americans are widely acknowledged and recognized in such diverse areas as commerce and finance, technology, medicine, education, journalism, the arts and virtually all aspects of American life, and in recent years, Korean American Day is being officially recognized in communities from coast to coast; and
WHEREAS, through hard work, talent and resources, Korean Americans have helped make Montgomery County one of the nation’s outstanding places to live, work, educate children and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, Montgomery County, the state of Maryland and the entire United States are richer for the contributions of the Korean American community, and although January 13 is annually celebrated as Korean American Day, the contributions of Korean Americans are appreciated 365 days a year;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the County Council of Montgomery County, Maryland, hereby recognizes January 13, 2017, as
AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the historical significance of this milestone is only part of a greater appreciation Montgomery County residents have for the valuable contributions Korean Americans have made, and continue to make, to the County and the United States of America.
