ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 20, 2017—Montgomery County Councilmember Roger Berliner, who was elected to a one-year term as Council president by his colleagues on Dec. 6, will meet with members of the media at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 23 to discuss key issues concerning the Council and its respective committees. Among the issues he will talk about are the status of the bill approved by the Council by a 5-4 vote on Jan. 17 that would increase the County minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2020. The bill is awaiting a decision by County Executive Ike Leggett on whether he will sign it.
Council President Berliner’s meeting with members of the media will be held in the SIXTH FLOOR Conference Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.
Other topics Council President Berliner will address include the proposed revision to the Downtown Bethesda Sector Plan. The Council’s Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee at 2 p.m. on Monday will begin its review of the plan that, as presented, would bring significant changes as downtown Bethesda redevelops. Earlier today, Marriott International announced the location it has chosen in downtown Bethesda for its future headquarters.
He also will discuss the County Department of Transportation’s program to change the County’s neighborhood permit parking programs to electronic permits. At a Jan. 19 meeting of the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee—which is chaired by President Berliner—there was considerable discussion whether the new systems works better for residents than the former program that used stickers for residents and placards for guests parking on the street.
President Berliner will provide further details about Bill 49-16, which will be the subject of a public hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 24. President Berliner is the chief sponsor of the bill that would create a micro-lending program to help small business owners and entrepreneurs with loans up to $15,000.
Council President Berliner will meet regularly with members of the media. Most meetings will be on Mondays.
