MCDOT Expanding Bicycle Network in White Flint, North Bethesda, Grosvenor

For Immediate Release: Thursday, February 2, 2017

MCDOT’s Division of Transportation Engineering continues to expand cycling options in White Flint, North Bethesda and Grosvenor as part of its commitment to support the transformation of these areas into more walkable and bikeable communities.

The projects include:

  • Nebel Street one-way separated bike lane (from Randolph Road to Marinelli Road) that was completed in October 2016.

  • Marinelli Road one-way separated bike lane (from Nebel Street to MD 355), which is being designed in 2017. This segment will connect to existing bike lanes on Marinelli Road between MD 355 and Executive Boulevard.

  • Woodglen Drive two-way separated bike lane (from Nicholson Lane to Edson Lane) that was completed November 2014. A future project will extend Woodglen Drive to Marinelli Road.

The White Flint Western Workaround project, which is underway, will build new bicycle facilities, as well.

Other bike-related amenities include the addition of trail lighting, bike racks and repair stations and 0n-road bike route wayfinding signs from Montgomery Mall to Downtown Bethesda.

Grosvenor is one of the first Bicycle and Pedestrian Priority Areas to be studied and a number of improvements are planned for fiscal years 2017 and 2018, including the following projects in the design stage:

  • Median refuge islands across MD 547 at Jolly Lane and Stillwater Avenue.

  • A shared -use path between Tuckerman Lane (northbound) and the Strathmore Mansion driveway.

  • A landscaping/gateway feature along MD 355.

In addition, MCDOT is developing a concept to complete a sidewalk gap on the east side of MD 355 from Grosvenor Lane to Pooks Hill Road. Installation of bike lanes on Tuckerman Lane, east of MD 355, has been scheduled to coincide with Highway Services’ paving schedule this fall.

In Bethesda, MCDOT is in the process of designing a two-lane separated bike lane on Woodmont Avenue between Norfolk Avenue to Montgomery Lane, which will link to an existing conventional bike lane that extends from Montgomery Lane to MD 355.
