Clarksburg Roadway, Sidewalk and Bikeway Projects to Improve Access and Mobility

For Immediate Release: Thursday, February 2, 2017

A number of projects, both County funded and developer funded, will be improving transportation options in Clarksburg and MCDOT will be holding public meetings in March and April to familiarize the public with them. More details about the meetings will be available soon.

The projects include:

  • Stringtown Road. Currently under construction is a 3,200-foot section of Stringtown Road from Overlook Park Drive to Snowden Farm Parkway that is expected to be completed this fall. A developer is constructing the project and the County is contributing to the cost.

  • MD 355 Sidewalk in Hyattstown. Currently under construction, this County-funded and constructed project is installing a 2,400-foot-long, five-foot-wide, concrete sidewalk along the west side of MD 355 (Frederick Road) in Hyattstown from MD 109 north to near the Montgomery County line. An eight-foot shared use path will also be constructed on the west side of MD 355 from MD 109 south to near Little Bennett Creek.  Construction is expected to be completed in 2017.

  • Clarksburg Connector. This project is both County and developer funded and will be built by MCDOT to extend Clarksburg Square Road to MD 355.  Construction is expected to begin in late summer of this year.

  • Frederick Road Bike Path. This County-funded and constructed project will build a 2.5-mile, 10-foot-wide hiker-biker path along the west side of Frederick Road (MD 355) between Stringtown Road and Milestone Manor Lane. Construction should begin in fall 2017.

  • Clarksburg Road at MD 355/MD 121. This project is partially funded by a developer and will be built by MCDOT in coordination with the MD 355/Clarksburg Shared Use Path Project (see below). Preliminary design is nearly completed and construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2018. The project will make intersection improvements that include auxiliary turn lanes. Within the intersection, on-road bike lanes and a sidewalk along the eastern side of the road will be installed on MD 355.  In addition, along the southern side of Clarksburg Road, MCDOT will install curb and gutter between MD 355 and Overlook Park Drive, provide on-road bike lanes and construct a 10-foot shared-use path.

  • MD 355/Clarksburg Shared Use Path.  This project constructs a 10-foot shared-use path along the eastern side of MD 355, between Snowden Farm Parkway and 865 feet north of Clarksburg, and a five-foot sidewalk southward to Stringtown Road.  A portion of this sidewalk will be constructed as part of the Clarksburg Road/MD 355/MD 121 intersection improvement project (see above).  Construction, which is partially funded by State aid, is expected to begin in the fall of 2018.

  • Clarksburg Road at Snowden Farm Parkway. This project’s preliminary design is nearly complete.  The County will construct it and developers will contribute to the cost.  MCDOT will widen the portion of Clarksburg Road between Overlook Park Drive and Snowden Farm Parkway, install a traffic signal at the Snowden Farm Parkway intersection, and create on-road bike lanes, a shared-use path along the southern side and a sidewalk on the northern side. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2020.
