Leggett Announces Completion of Stringtown Road Project to Address the Growing Number of Drivers, Bikers and Walkers in the Clarksburg Area

For Immediate Release: Thursday, August 31, 2017

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett announced that Stringtown Road between St. Clair Road and Snowden Farm Parkway will reopen today after completion of an extensive project to widen the road from two to four lanes and add bike paths and a sidewalk that connect to the Greenway Trail.

“The Stringtown Road improvement project has increased the road’s capacity to handle the growing number of drivers, bikers and walkers in the Clarksburg area,” said County Executive Ike Leggett. “It is another investment in our Upcounty that expands County-wide efforts to create a balanced transportation system that increases travel options.”

The project along a 3,200-foot-section of Stringtown Road included:

  • Expanding 1,200 feet of roadway from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided roadway (from St. Clair Road to the future Gate Rail Road) with two new culverts;

  • Making engineering improvements to realign the road;

  • Constructing an eight-foot-wide bikeway along the north side of the road;

  • Constructing an eight-foot-wide bikeway that transitions to a five-foot-wide sidewalk on the south side of the road;

  • Constructing 2,000 feet of the two westbound lanes of the road from the future Gate Rail Road to Snowden Farm Parkway; and

  • Installing improved stormwater management features.

“Since taking office in 2010, I’ve advocated on behalf of Clarksburg’s residents on the pressing need to widen and realign Stringtown Road to enhance safety,” said Councilmember Craig Rice, who represents Clarksburg and much of the Upcounty.  “I am pleased that the community can now access Stringtown Road with confidence because of its enhanced accessibility and safety improvements for drivers and pedestrians.”

In addition to Councilmember Rice, Leggett was joined at the event by Councilmember Leventhal, Department of Transportation Director Al Roshdieh, Kate Kubit, vice president, Elm Street Development, community members Cecile Foreman, Frances Foreman and Margaret Foreman, and Joann Woodson, president of Clarksburg Historical Society.

Stringtown Road is located in an area of growing population, connecting Clarksburg Village, Clarksburg Town Center and Route 270. Prior to the road upgrade, this stretch of roadway was two lanes and lacked dedicated bike and sidewalk facilities. By including the bike path and sidewalk, this project, along with many others in Clarksburg, is enhancing the transportation network for this community.

Elm Street Development managed the road construction project and the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) designed it. The joint development project was constructed by Elm Street Development. The total project cost was $8 million, with Elm Street Development contributing $4 million and the County contributing $4 million.
