Look Ahead - Week of September 10 to September 16

Executive Summary

The project is currently tracking slightly ahead of schedule and on budget. The contractor is wrapping up with the Geothermal Well installation and has started installation of the Support of Excavation system (see photo). The excavation for the building foundation will start within the next two weeks, continue through the fall, and reach completion in mid-January 2018 when the bottom of the hole is reached.

Vacating the Mid-County Regional Services Center Building

The Mid-County Regional Services Center Building vacated on August 31 and will be demolished as part of the planned Plaza development south of Reedie Drive. In its place, an outdoor plaza including a terraced amphitheater, entertainment stage, fountain, and other outdoor amenities will be built.

Service providers formally located in the Mid-County Regional Services Building have relocated as noted in the Special Bulletin.

Geothermal Drilling

The Contractor will wrap up with the Geothermal Drilling operation during the week of September 10. Placing the UBends (Geothermal elements) and grouting will continue through the upcoming week and will finish on or before September 23.

Site Dewatering

Mass excavation and construction of the building foundation requires the lowering of the groundwater table, which is generally 35 feet below the existing ground surface. The dewatering process will temporarily lower the groundwater roughly 25 feet to allow for construction. Dewatering is currently underway and will continue over the next 22 months at which time it will restore to normal levels.

Installation of Support of Excavation System (SOE) System

The contractor continues drilling and placing solider piles for the Support of Excavation system (see photo). A second track-mounted drill rig (see photo) arrived on site and will be assembled and placed in service during the upcoming week at which time both rigs will work to install the Support of Excavation System. The solider piles are an integral part of the Support of Excavation System.

Excess Soils Removal

The contractor will remove excess soils generated from the drilling operations. Mass excavation will start later in September.

Ongoing and Planned Activities:

  • Wrap up drilling for Geothermal Wells.
  • Continue placing Geothermal elements and grouting boreholes.
  • Continue drilling and placing solider piles for the Support of Excavation System.
  • Assemble and activate the second drill rig for drilling and placing soldier piles.
  • Testing and monitoring of groundwater will continue.
  • Installation of Inclinometer Stations will be scheduled (likely week of September 11).
