For Immediate Release: Thursday, September 14, 2017

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection and regional environmental partners invite the public to attend the seventh annual H2O Summit on Saturday, September 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rockville Senior Center. The event is located at 1150 Carnation Drive.

This free event is focused on connecting residents, nonprofit organizations and government agencies to share ideas and programs focused on improving our local waterways. The H2O Summit is open to everyone, but is of particular interest to nonprofit watershed groups, community activists, business leaders, and residents living near local water bodies.

“County residents, businesses, congregations, nonprofits and local governments are doing amazing, innovative projects to protect our rivers and streams,” said Lisa Feldt, director of the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection. “The H2O Summit allows us to showcase their work and share ideas through networking, workshops and speakers. I am proud to represent an agency and a County at the forefront of this work that recognizes the importance of community involvement in solving our greatest environmental challenges.”

The H2O Summit will have educational workshops and speakers addressing such topics as:

Restoration efforts in the Sligo Creek Watershed

Green Streets

The impact of fats, oils and grease on WSSC and City of Rockville infrastructure

Greening through partnerships with the Audubon Naturalist Society, Anacostia Riverkeeper and the Silver Spring United Methodist Church

Watershed Stewards Academy

Lunch will be provided by Montgomery Parks and will feature the Community Leader / Stream Volunteer of the Year award. This award highlights an individual who is committed to enhancing the quality of life in our community by protecting and improving Montgomery County's water resources in a sustainable way.  Past winners included Kit Gage of the Friends of Sligo Creek, Kay Fulcomer of Rock Creek Conservancy and Paul Hlavinka of the Muddy Branch Alliance.

The H2O Summit is hosted by Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, the City of Rockville, the City of Gaithersburg, Montgomery Parks, WSSC and the University of Maryland Extension.
