Department of Recreation is Hiring Hundreds of Summer Employees; Summer Jobs Fair Set for Saturday, February 17, in Silver Spring

The Montgomery County Department of Recreation is hosting a Summer Camp and Job Fair on Saturday, February 17, from noon to 3 p.m. at the East County Community Recreation Center, 3310 Gateshead Manor Way, in Silver Spring.  The job fair is designed to showcase summer employment opportunities.

 

“The recreation department hires more than 3,000 seasonal employees annually, and this summer the department still needs to fill almost 1,000 of those jobs,” said County Executive Ike Leggett.

 

Applicants are encouraged to bring their resumes to the job fair and prepare for speed interviews. The opportunities range from lifeguards to camp counselors to summer camp directors.

 

“We are looking for energetic applicants who enjoy working with young people,” said Vicki Kane, manager of County-wide programs for the Department of Recreation.

 

The seasonal pay begins at $11.50 an hour and increases based on experience and position.  

 

Employment opportunities are available with the following recreation programs:

Aquatics (Lifeguards)

  • Applicants must be at least 15 years old to apply.
  • Must have American Red Cross training. Training is available through the Department of Recreation for a fee. Applicants must pass a swim test before taking the course. For information about upcoming courses, visit ActiveMontgomery.org and search “lifeguard training.”
  • Applicants must be available to work the summer season.
  • Annual employment opportunities are also available.
  • Positions are limited to no more than 35 hours a week.

Summer Camps

  • Positions include day camp counselors, assistant directors, and directors for summer camps located across Montgomery County.
  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old to apply.
  • Camp dates are July 2 - August 10, 2018. Applicants must be able to work the entire program.
  • Counselor positions are limited to no more than 35 hours per week. Director and assistant director positions are 40 hours per week.

Therapeutic Recreation (TR)

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old and must have experience volunteering or working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Positions in camps and programs for individuals with disabilities include TR leaders, camp assistants, mainstream companions, camp directors and assistant directors. Seasonal staff to work evenings and weekend programs.
  • Must attend training and commit to the length of the program.
  • Behavior management experience is a plus.
  • Camps vary in length from four to eight weeks.
  • Most positions are limited to no more than 35 hours per week.

TeenWorks

  • A year-round employment program for Montgomery County teens and young adults, including high school students who are at least 15 years old and young adults, between the ages of 18 and 24, who have never been employed.
  • Teens are employed by Montgomery County Recreation and placed in public sector and nonprofit jobs throughout the county.
  • Teens are placed in a variety of work roles, which allow them to develop critical, marketable skills.
  • TeenWorks staff earn minimum wage and can work up to four hours on school days and eight hours on weekends.
  • TeenWorks jobs require a one-year commitment. The goal is to provide skills and work experience needed to move up to the next level. After successfully completing 300 hours of service, TeenWorks graduates will receive a certificate of completion and a letter of reference.

All applicants must successfully pass a background investigation, fingerprinting and attend mandatory in-service training. Some positions may also require a child protective services background check, van training and first aid/CPR certification.

The Department of Recreation provides employment opportunities for youth that demonstrate initiative and leadership skills. As such, the application process and all communication should be completed by the applicant and not by a parent or guardian. Resumes should include any experience working with children, such as babysitting or daycare; any leadership positions filled, such as school clubs or sports teams; and certifications, such as first aid or CPR.
