As part of MCDOT’s MD 355 (Rockville Pike) Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station, single lane closures are planned on weekdays only during March and April between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The closures are needed as MCDOT begins construction of Intersection Improvements at Rockville Pike/Jones Bridge Road/Center Drive (National Institutes of Health (NIH)) and at Rockville Pike/Woodmont Avenue.

Weather and work conditions permitting, the following closures are planned:

  • March 22-23:  ROCKVILLE PIKE Between SOUTH Drive (NIH) & WOODMONT Avenue. The southbound and northbound LEFT lanes will be closed to demolish the center island at Center Drive (NIH) intersection.

  • March 26-30; April 2-6, 9-13, 16-18:  WOODMONT Avenue between ROCKVILLE PIKE and BATTERY Lane, and ROCKVILLE PIKE between SOUTH CHELSEA Lane and CENTER Drive (NIH). The southbound and northbound LEFT lanes, and southbound right turn from ROCKVILLE PIKE onto WOODMONT Avenue will be closed for work on the Rockville Pike/Woodmont Avenue Intersection

About the Crossing Project:

This work is part of the ongoing construction of the Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station, which will build: 1) A shallow, pedestrian underpass connecting the National Institutes of Health and the bus/commuter transit center on the west side with the Naval Support Activity Bethesda/Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the east side of Rockville Pike; and 2) Deep elevators on the Navy side of MD 355 to the Metrorail mezzanine.  When completed by the end of 2021, the Crossing will provide a safer environment for people and vehicles in this heavily trafficked area.

A Safety Reminder:

As construction of the Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station continues, residents are reminded to exercise caution as they walk, bike or travel near the construction zone. Pay attention to all posted signs, walk or bike only on designated crosswalks, sidewalks and paths, and do not walk in the road or in the construction zone.
