Flower Hill Elementary School Student Wins Fair Housing Poster Contest

The Montgomery County Office of Human Rights (OHR) has announced that Madelaine Lemus, a fifth-grade student from Flower Hill Elementary School designed the winning poster for the Fair Housing poster contest. The winner was announced in a ceremony held at Flower Elementary School located at 18425 Flower Hill Way in Gaithersburg on Tuesday, April 18.

The winning poster was selected by the Interagency Fair Housing Coordinating Group as the best illustration of the true intent of the county fair housing law from 50 entries created by participants of the Office of Human Rights Diversity Camp.

County Executive Ike Leggett, OHR Director Jim Stowe, Flower Hill Valley Principal Lamar Whitmore, Human Rights Commissioners Janice Freeman and Alejandro Becerra, Interagency Fair Housing Coordinating Group Committee Member Cuvator Armstrong, National Fair Housing Alliance Officials Gregory Parrish and Alia Fierro, Captain David Kennedy, Captain Tyrone Dement, Lt. Irving Smith and Lt. Maria Brown from Fire and Rescue Services, and representatives for the Department of Transportation Ride On  joined the fourth and fifth graders and Flower Hill staff for the ceremony. Leggett presented a $250 check to Lemus at the event.

The poster will be featured on Ride-On Buses and will used in other OHR promotional materials to promote fair housing month.
